Mark Morris Dance Group’s performance of Dido & Aeneas is dedicated to the memory of Craig Smith, Founder of Emmanuel Music (1947-2007).

Dido and Aeneas is among the greatest of Mark Morris’ many choreographic triumphs—a masterpiece built on a masterpiece, and an essential contribution to contemporary culture. Morris pulled and stretched Henry Purcell’s majestic creation into a taut and thoroughly modern dance opera of newfound magnitude, using his profoundly understanding musical ear and his world-renowned gift for choreographic expression. Mark Morris conducts the orchestra and singers of Emmanuel Music as the Mark Morris Dance Group celebrates one of Morris’ finest achievements.

Over the course of history the tragic love story of Dido and Aeneas has been told many times: in Virgil’s Aeneid, Christoper Marlowe’s Dido, Queen of Carthage and Henry Purcell’s magnificent operatic masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas. Contemporary audiences can now experience this tale through the prism of Mark Morris’s creative mind and the stunning dancers of the Mark Morris Dance Group. His dance opera, Dido and Aeneas, performed to the music of Purcell’s opera, relives a story for the ages as seen with contemporary eyes.

"Mark Morris is a dancemaker and a spellbinder."
