Balé Folclórico da Bahia Celebrity Series Debut
Saturday, January 22, 2011, 8pm, The Opera House
The Brazilian state of Bahia is said to be the most African part of Brazil, a place where otherwise long forgotten gods are still remembered. This is the tradition of Balé Folclórico da Bahia—exploding with color, movement, music, mystery, and drama. The centerpiece of this performance is Sacred Heritage, a work rooted in the Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, created for the 20th anniversary of the company in 2008, and seen in the U.S. for the first time on this tour. From Capoeira to Samba de Roda and Afixire dances, Balé Folclórico da Bahia brings thrilling choreography, joyous rhythms, and a feisty, flirtatious exuberance to every performance.
“Fireworks and feats from Brazil. Turn off the electricity; the dancers of Balé Folclórico da Bahia power the show...”
