Soweto Gospel Choir
Sunday, February 12, 3pm, Symphony Hall
Africa is a veritable river of great singers and vocal traditions, and South Africa is at the headwaters of that great harmonious river. With a mixture of thick polyrhythms, rich harmonies, a capella singing, energetic dancing, and vibrant, colorful costumes, as well as accompaniment by an exciting four-piece band and percussion section, the mix is a thrilling, thoroughly involving experience.
“[The choir] has a cornucopia of remarkable voices: sharp, sweet, kindly, raspy, and incantatory leads above a magnificently velvety blend … the music was both meticulous and unstoppable … the songs were both spirited and spectacular.” —The New York Times
