For our annual holiday party Celebrity Series decided to “swap” out the usual Yankee Swap game with a more meaningful activity. Instead of buying gifts, all staff members pooled donations to give a gift to Sumner Elementary Boys and Girls Club in Roslindale.
Led by Director Nina Vansuch, a long time Celebrity Series subscriber, Sumner Boys & Girls Club joined Celebrity Series Neighborhood Arts in January 2013 as one of our earliest community partners. This season at the Sumner, Celebrity Series Neighborhood Artist Ryan Edwards will be leading a 4 week music residency with 5th graders during January with B&G Club dance instructor La’Toya Jackson. They’ll premiere their residency dance piece on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2pm, sharing a program with Jean Appolon Expressions (Haitian dance), Ryan’s Masary Studios (percussion/video projection) and Chittick Elementary School. In addition Celebrity Series will also present The Guy Mendilow Ensemble to the Sumner students in March. Sumner B&G also participated in painting a Street Piano in Roslindale in both 2013 & 2016.
Now entering its fifth season, Neighborhood Arts brings the joy of live performance to people of all ages and abilities, drawing deeply on partnerships with Boston area artists and community organizations to activate neighborhoods with a rich and varied array of opportunities. This season, Neighborhood Arts will present 90+ events, including interactive, hands-on workshops for youth, artist residencies with youth ensembles, and free concerts in neighborhood venues in six Boston neighborhoods: Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, and the South End. In 2016-17, Neighborhood Arts embraces the artistry of world drumming, dancing, singing, and original compositions with professional artists and students performing side by side.
