The eldest son in the famous New Orleans-based Marsalis family, 2011 NEA Jazz Master Branford Marsalis has built a name for himself as a performer, composer, and bandleader with nearly 30 albums. After four decades in the limelight—from his stint as the '90s Tonight Show bandleader, to projects with Harry Connick Jr. and the Grateful Dead, to the music in the Netflix film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom—Branford Marsalis keeps returning to his superlative quartet. The Grammy Award-winning Marsalis has cultivated a group that has stood the test of time, travelling and touring with these band members for years.
Marsalis, with his longtime quartet, brings a kaleidoscope of moods and perspectives to a program that will include music from their latest album, The Secret Between the Shadow and the Soul. Marsalis’ long musical relationships with bandmates Joey Calderazzo, Eric Revis, and Justin Faulkner are evident when the four play together: while leaving room for improvisation and surprise, their musical alignment is clear. “I couldn’t create this music with people I didn’t know,” Marsalis said to the Guardian.
“Marsalis stands as one of the most imposing tenor and soprano saxophonists in jazz today.”
