Launched in 2022 as we considered what it means to be together after the isolation of the pandemic, the project matches composers and Boston-based ensembles to create short pieces with a solo for each player before all the artists once again perform as a group.
The Solo(s) Together project centers a diverse group of creators and musicians from communities historically underrepresented in the chamber and classical music establishment.
Charles Overton, harp
Emma Kondo Powell, violin
Mina Kim, cello
In their first rehearsal as a trio, Emma Kondo Powell, Mina Kim, and Charles Overton shared the Japanese pancake dish okonomiyaki. In honor of this delicious and joyful collaboration, Trio Oko was born.
Creating meaningful and joyful human connection through music, Trio Oko highlights their distinctive harp trio instrumentation with the world premiere of a Solo(s) Together work by Indian-American composer Reena Esmail, created just for them, as well as Esmail’s Piano Trio rewritten for harp by Trio Oko's own Charles Overton. Other selections honor the spirit of Solo(s) Together, giving performers space to shine, one at a time.
Charles is a longtime Celebrity Series favorite with a national career, and Emma and Mina are members of Rasa String Quartet, who appeared in 2023/24 and also appear in December 2024’s Stringfest. Through diverse selections both classical and contemporary, they make the case for the harp in chamber ensembles, and expand the harp trio repertoire.
Three artists we know you’ll love, making music and having fun together: it’s an irresistible way to end the Neighborhood Arts season!
Emma Kondo Powell and Mina Kim coach and perform alongside young strings players in December's Stringfest at the Kroc Center!
